Training is designed to help Teacher Aides identify and understand the unique strengths and needs of individual tamaiti within a cultural context. We will be looking at the why behind why some of our students have behavioural challenges. By having a clear code of conduct in place, teacher aides know what is expected of them in terms of professional conduct, behaviour and ethics.

Working with tamariki and rangatahi is a privilege. We regularly hear about tamariki and rangatahi suffering abuse by the people and organisations who work with them. Tamariki deserve to be safe as they participate and thrive. Parents and carers rely on the people working and supporting their tamariki to behave in ways that keep their tamariki safe and encourage their development. Police vetting alone will not identify people who are inappropriate or unsafe to work with tamariki; therefore, a child-focused Code of Conduct is so important. Teacher Aides are very often the trusted person that children and young people disclose abuse to. One of the key responsibilities of teacher aides is to be vigilant and attentive to the needs of the students they work with. They should be aware of the signs of abuse and neglect and know how to respond if they suspect that a child is at risk.                                                                                                            Evidence from child abuse survivors shows that for most children their disclosure journey was negative. There were numerous missed opportunities for intervention and support identified along these journeys. Negative journeys were characterised by poor responses from those to whom they had disclosed, lack of support, particularly emotional support, and a lack of protective action taken. Recognising a disclosure, and how you respond is vitally important to ensure children and young people feel believed and can access the support they need.

Recognising and Responding to Grooming

As a Teacher Aide you have a unique opportunity to recognise and respond to the grooming of children both at school and at home or in the community. Very often the trusted relationship between tamariki and their Teacher Aide identifies that someone in a position of trust is grooming a child or children. Gaining an insight into grooming and the motivations to sexually abuse children will provide you with opportunities to prevent abuse from happening or interrupt harmful behaviour. Understanding neurodiversity

In this course, teacher aides will be introduced to the different types of neurodiversity and how they can manifest in our ākonga within the classroom context. Teacher aides will gain an understanding of neurodiversity including autism, dyslexia, dyscalculia, ADHD, ODD etc. This neurodiversity often leads to challenging behaviour, which our facilitator has been trained to manage.

How to support neurodiverse learners in the classroom

In this course, teacher aides will be introduced to the social model of disability versus the medical model, with explanation as to why this is important. This knowledge will support the creation of activities that build on ākonga strengths, and therefore meet individual needs.
Teacher aides will be supported to learn about how accommodations can be made in the classroom to meet the specific needs of neurodiverse and of learners with additional needs.

The learning will be approached through a trauma-informed lens to support the growth and development of all learners, but particularly those with neurodiversity.

There will also be a focus on navigating successful transitions; between subjects, break times, coming to school and leaving school, between classes and ultimately between schools themselves.

Challenging behaviour: How to manage in the classroom

In this course, teacher aides will be introduced to how to utilise trauma informed practices when dealing with adverse behaviour in the classroom. Teacher aides will be supported to see the distinct differences between the traditional behaviourist approaches (punishments and rewards) to a relationship-based approach (negotiated and strength based).

We will be discussing how to identify internalised vs externalised behaviours and will look at ways of dealing with both.

Teacher aides will learn about the different types of engagement commonly seen in the classroom and will be given tools to effectively increase engagement, thereby reducing the need to deal with negative behaviours.

Boys and literacy: how to support and engage

In this course, Dr Phill Simpson will discuss the how and whys of a good literacy program in the primary classroom. Dr Simpson will discuss and provide examples of good practice in oracy, reading, writing and spelling, with a particular focus on writing, and how teacher aides can help with the writing process. Many of these strategies are focused on how to engage boys in literacy tasks, and how to make these activities engaging and fun.
Furthermore, Dr Simpson elaborates on his ideas around the need for teacher aides to be storytellers, rather than writers themselves, in order to encourage and facilitate interest in literacy.

Session 1: Whakawhanaungatanga - the importance of building relationships and our own practice.

Session content
This workshop will explore the diverse roles & perspectives of teacher aides in Aotearoa. Participants will learn about relevant skills, demands and responsibilities. This workshop emphasises the importance of good practice including:

· awareness of professional guidelines

· recognising cultural values and competencies

· building foundation relationships with colleagues, students and whānau

· the importance of stakeholder voice.

Session 2: Engaging ākonga

Session content

This workshop will focus on:

· linking positive behaviours back to the schools’ vision, values, and approaches

· applying Universal Design for Learning principles

· facilitating learning discussions including effective prompting and questioning

· building our kete on managing behaviour in the classroom including noticing and acting on the responses of the ākonga and identifying triggers.

Session 3: Supporting ākonga with motivational activities in literacy

Session content

This workshop will explore the ways that teacher aides can support ākonga through:

· exploring literacy tutoring techniques

· using explicit strategies to support the learning progression of reading and writing

· making connections between the spoken and written language

· building on students’ strengths and foster a love of oral language, reading and writing

Session 4: Supporting ākonga with motivational activities in Mathematics & Statistics

Session content

This workshop will focus on:

· supporting numeracy learning for all learners

· mathematical tasks that promote conceptual understanding

· supporting collaborative learning

· using a range of strategies to promote self-efficacy and growth mindsets

Session 5: Pedagogy and Practice

Session content

This workshop will support participants to build their teaching resource kete and explore how to better meet the specific learning needs of their diverse ākonga. Participants will gain confidence in:

· recognising the different roles, responsibilities, and needs of teacher aides

· exploring the specific needs of ākonga

· identifying current strategies that have a positive impact

· introducing and adapting strategies that work for specific learning needs
