Information on Maths Knowledge Building Years 7-8
A series of six interactive online workshops will be offered to strengthen teachers’ mathematical knowledge. These sessions will focus on developing a deeper conceptual understanding of rational numbers and algebra. This learning will support teachers to build the necessary background knowledge to effectively notice, recognise, and respond to students’ learning needs and any misconceptions that may arise.
Structure of the PLD
The first four workshops are focused on Rational Numbers, and the last two workshops unpack Algebra. The content of each session includes:
- Session 1: Rational Numbers – Concepts and Representations
An exploration of what rational numbers are, the role of place value, and effective representations to support learning. - Session 2: Rational Numbers – Equivalence
Understanding equivalence through simplifying and converting fractions, and converting between fractions, decimals, and percentages. - Session 3: Rational Numbers – Operations
Developing confidence with operations involving fractions and decimals. - Session 4: Rational Numbers – Proportional Reasoning
Investigating ratios and proportional reasoning to support comparison and problem solving. - Session 5: Algebra – Expressions and Equations
Introducing algebraic language and notation and solving equations involving variables. - Session 6: Algebra – Linear Patterns and Finding the Rule
Exploring linear patterns, including term-to-term and position-to-term rules, using tables, coordinate grids, and related representations.
Delivery of PLD
This PLD will be delivered online only. The six sessions will be offered multiple times throughout the school year, and again in 2027. Participants may enrol in the full series or select individual sessions across the year.
More details regarding session dates and times will be made available from Monday, 2nd March 2026.
Eligibility Criteria
This PLD is available to teachers of Years 7–8 in state and state‑integrated schools.
Heads of department, senior leaders, and staff involved in mathematics and statistics are welcome to attend. However, the primary focus of this PLD is on supporting teachers of Year 7 and 8 students, including those who teach mathematics alongside another subject specialisation.
