Information on Secondary Mathematics PLD

Professional learning and development (PLD) to support the implementation of the refreshed Mathematics and Statistics Learning Area for Years 9–10 of The New Zealand Curriculum will be available nationwide from Term 1, 2026.

The aims of this PLD are to:

  • Strengthen teachers’ understanding of the refreshed Mathematics and Statistics learning area, including how learning progresses across the teaching sequence.
  • Deepen teachers’ pedagogical content knowledge of key concepts for Years 9–10, with guidance on important teaching points and common misconceptions.
  • Provide practical examples and activities that model evidence informed teaching practices that teachers can apply directly in their classrooms.

Online PLD Sessions

Delivery of the PLD

PLD will be delivered by Ministry approved facilitators.

In person PLD

Face-to-face sessions will be offered in regional centres. More details about session dates/times will be made available from Monday, 16th February 2026.

Online PLD

  • One-hour online sessions will be available from Term 1. More details about session dates/times will be made available from Monday, 16th February 2026.
  • Recordings will be made available later in the year for asynchronous access.

Eligibility Criteria

This PLD is available to teachers working in Phase 4 of the curriculum in state and state integrated schools.

Heads of faculty or department are welcome to attend; however, the primary focus is on teachers of Year 9 and 10 students, including those who teach mathematics alongside another specialisation.

Only one participant per school is allowed to register for this PLD. 

How to Request PLD

PLD requests are submitted through the online request system: <Link will be available from Monday, 16th February 2026>

Before submitting your request:

Discuss the PLD with your principal or tumuaki and confirm which Year 9–10 teachers will participate on each PLD day.

Individual participants must register using the link above.

The Ministry will receive and review your request before allocating facilitators.

The Ministry will notify you once your schedule is confirmed.
