Applications for the Term 1 round of Ministry funded RAPLD have been realigned to support the Government’s commitment to increasing literacy rates for all students and upskilling existing kaiako in teaching reading and writing or pānui and tuhituhi and the use of assessment for learning and aromatawai.
Applications in the RAPLD T1 round are being approved where there is alignment with the following three areas:

What this means for schools and kura
If your school has applied for RAPLD funding in the Term 1 round, you will fall into one of the following scenarios:

Your school/kura has: Made an application in Term 1 round for RAPLD hours that aligns with the above areas, this application will be approved, and you should have received a letter from your PLD Lead confirming this.
Or,
Previously made an application for structured literacy RAPLD but was not successful, this decision has been reconsidered and can now be allocated. In both these scenarios, all RAPLD allocations are for the 2024 school year only, meaning approved PLD will need to be delivered before the end of the year. If your application relates to structured literacy, takiwā staff will be available to work with you to ensure you can access the appropriate providers so this PLD can start as soon as possible.
Or,
Made an application for RAPLD and not been successful in this allocation. You should have received a letter from your PLD lead confirming this. We acknowledge the disappointment and understand the effort schools make when preparing and submitting PLD applications. |
In all the above scenarios, a range of resources, as well as support from regional offices will be available to help schools and kura make the most of the upcoming teacher-only day (to be held between 27 May – 7 June).
No decisions have been made beyond this round of RAPLD and this work is underway. More information about what PLD will be available, when, and how this can be accessed will be shared in early May.
For this reason, it is recommended schools and kura wait for this information before making any Term 2 applications.
What this means for PLD Providers
In support of the Government’s focus on raising literacy rates and strengthening teachers, kaiako and leaders’ capabilities in structured approaches to learning and assessment, there are changes to the allocation of RAPLD that will be delivered from Term 2.
Where RAPLD applications have alignment to the three above areas, they have been approved for the T1 round.
Any previous applications for PLD in structured literacy that were declined for the 2023 T3/T4 round have been reconsidered and can now be approved.
Please note that these RAPLD allocations are for the 2024 school year only, meaning this PLD will need to be delivered before the end of the year.
Where RAPLD applications are not aligned with the three above areas, they won’t be progressing any further in the T1 round.
While no decisions have yet been made beyond this round, this work is underway, and decisions will be communicated as soon as possible in early May.
