The Better Start Literacy Approach | Te Ara Reo Matatini (BSLA), a new professional support for literacy specialists and teachers of Years 1 to 3, is now open for applications for cohort one.

The BSLA, delivered by the University of Canterbury, is an integrated approach to developing vocabulary, oral, listening, spelling, writing and reading skills in the first year of learning, utilising the Ready to Read Phonics Plus texts. It focuses on the link between spoken and written language, supporting children’s phonological and phonic awareness, letter-sound knowledge and oral language.

Applications for support for cohort one close on Monday 8 February 2021. The first cohort of support will focus on teachers of new entrants and Year 1.

The Ministry and the University of Canterbury are running two zoom sessions to share information about the Better Start Literacy Approach, explaining how schools will access and use it and how to apply for Ministry funding support for this.

For information on the BSLA professional support and how to apply, visit the BSLA webpage on the PLD website.
