Information on targeted and tailored PLD

The Ministry is funding professional learning and development (PLD) to support targeted and tailored teaching by those schools who received the Year 0-2 staffing entitlement.

This PLD will help teachers develop deep expertise in structured literacy approach (SLA) elements and effective, targeted and tailored teaching. It will also further support the application of explicit teaching principles.

As part of the targeted and tailored PLD, teachers will learn assessment practices and how to use tools to monitor progress.

The PLD includes tailored teaching for students with dyslexia and other literacy and language learning difficulties.

Additionally, this PLD will support participants in leading sustainable changes in teaching practices and building in-school capability.

The support will be available from Term 2 2025, initially focussing on schools that receive a staffing entitlement for Year 0-2 literacy support.

The Ministry will be contacting eligible schools directly to inform them of this opportunity and how to enrol.

Eligibility criteria

Schools that receive a staffing entitlement for Year 0-2 literacy support can apply for one staff member to attend this PLD starting in Term 2, Term 3 or Term 4 2025.

As they already receive a staffing entitlement there is no further release time as part of this PLD package.

Structure of the PLD

This PLD will be offered through providers who have been quality-assured by the Ministry.

The PLD will be delivered over four school terms and comprises the following:

  • Core delivery: Five full day facilitated workshops per teacher
  • Ongoing coaching and mentoring (over four terms)
  • Specific targeted and tailored content for all elements of SLA as outlined in the English learning area

The PLD may involve face-to-face and/or virtual/remote learning and will run in cohorts. While individual providers will offer different dates for delivery, for the 2025 school year, cohort details are:
